Theologian Criticizes Mayor

TNS News Service

Atchitteburg — In a very bold move, Wednesday, a significant public leader has denied St. Augustine’s writings on when life begins. Now, he is being tormented by a prominent theologian for his views.

Leroy White, mayor of Atchitteburg, Kansas has issued a statement saying that he has dissented from Augustine’s definition of when life begins, days before the 2008 Election.

“I just don’t think he had the technology to determine when life begins,” the mayor said in a radio interview with correspondent Gail Gathwright on Wednesday’s edition of KBKR’s program, Enlightened. When asked how he as a Roman Catholic could justify his political views on abortion, given that Augustine said life is not possessed by an embryo until 30 days, Mr. White responded, suggesting that many Catholics are wrong for their beliefs.

“For many Catholics, it is a question of a contradiction between what seems to be the unenlightened view of a dead guy and the view of contemporary experts in theology and in science. Augustine didn’t posses the ability to make that decision. Therefore, I don’t think there should be any question.”

“Why should Augustine have any rights to tell us that an embryo isn’t alive until it’s 30 days old?” he said. “Shouldn’t it be up to the Roman Catholic Church?”

This interview follows theologian and senator, Nancy Pelosi’s comments on the discrepancies between her political views and the views of her Church.

The Senator was contacted and asked her opinion of Mr. White’s statements. She responded with harsh words for Mr. White.

“Who is he to question my authority on this matter? Does he not know what he’s saying? We have proof that Augustine wrote what he did. How can he deny that?”

Pelosi called on priests across the country, especially in Mr. White’s diocese to refuse to admit Mr. White to communion. She also strongly suggested that it would be even better for Mr. White to refrain from participating in his Church.

“Mr. White has no ability to speak on this matter, and yet he decided to do so. He must be punished severely.”

Many pro-abortion Catholics also called for Mr. Leroy White to refrain from receiving Communion as well. These people are calling what he has done as “appalling” and “disturbing.”

A colleague of Senator Pelosi and governor of the State of Kansas, Kathleen Sebilius, suggested that Mr. White’s statements usher in a “new kind of theology.”

“What he has done is assert the authority of the Church, something that seems to be outdated. I mean, how many people today are following the Church unquestioningly? Not too many.”

“The Church was not designed to look at things objectively,” she said. “It should be up to individuals to decide what they believe, and Mr. White wants to impose his views on the small town which he has been elected to serve.”

However, many of the town’s 20 residents disagree with the Governor’s statements. One such man is Dr. Gwendolyn Eleanor.

“We have elected him to serve our community and he serves us well. In fact he has the full 100% support of everyone in this town, and they all fully back his statements, especially on abortion and Augustine. The governor, like usual, does not know what she’s talking about.”

The mayor could not be reached for comments at this time. However, his staff has suggested that he will deliver a statement within the next few days.
